The Morgan is home to one of the world’s largest and most important collections of drawings by Giambattista Tiepolo (1696–1770) and his eldest son Domenico (1727–1804), with more than 300 representative examples of their lively invention and masterful techniques.

Nearly twenty years ago, the Morgan decided to expand its collection of drawings and prints into the modern era.

This exhibition presents Mesopotamian sculptural works from ca. 3300-2250 B.C., bringing together for the first time pieces from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Yale University Babylonian Collection, the Kimbell Art Museum, and the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.

The market for children's books was an eighteenth-century innovation. By the last half of the nineteenth century, it was a major publishing enterprise. Efforts to educate greater portions of the populace and a growing middle class had fostered a larger reading public. Advancing technology had changed the appearance and availability of books. New illustrative and binding processes were often tested on books for children, giving them a glamour that dust jackets must provide today.

Private Treasures provided the public the rare opportunity to view works from the sixteenth through the twentieth centuries drawn entirely from an esteemed private collection.

This summer, the Morgan will continue its annual sculpture series with a large-scale installation by Berlin-based artist Monika Grzymala.

Over thirty old master drawings by French, Italian, and Northern artists of the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries are featured in this exhibition, with a particular concentration of works by eighteenth-century French draftsmen.

By the mid-eighteenth century, the practice of sketching outdoors with oil paint had become popular among landscape artists.

The Morgan holds the original manuscript and art for one of the world’s most widely read and cherished books, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince (1943).

On view were more than eighty sheets by French, British, Italian, Dutch, Flemish, and German draftsmen from the sixteenth through the early twentieth centuries.
