Roman bookseller's mark (?) above Aldine device; possibly Stefani family library (Venice), perhaps once in the private library of Federico Stefani (1828-1897); the author, Giovanni Stefano Emiliano, has been connected with the Stefani family (see DBI); Samuel Melton Fisher (1859-1938), the painter, who evidently acquired it in Venice in the late nineteenth century; he married an Italian, Alba Stefani, with whom he had two (?) sons, one, Stefani Melton Fisher (1894-1963), also a painter, a sale conducted by Reeman Dansie on 6 August 2014 contained property associated with Samuel and Stefani Melton Fisher; Reeman Dansie, Colchester, 24 June 2014, lot 987 (part); Sotheby's London, 20 November 2014, lot 8 (undesignated consignor; sold for £50,000). acquisition: Purchased at Sotheby's via Robin Halwas; T.
