Summary:

Reporting on the retreat of General Clerfayt, the defeat of General Kaunitz and the Duke of York's position; saying "The Emperor's Army is doing nothing. The Duke of York's, as yet every where Successful has been reinforced by near 14000 Austrian Hessians under General Kinsky;" describing the plans of attack and asking that he not mention them to anyone; relating his participation in a recent Engagement as a member of the Regiment; saying "I joined the Regiment & charged with them. The Enemy's fire was one of the most severe I have as yet been in. But this is only a Commencement de Campagne, which is not on the whole so brilliant as expected. - On the other hand the British who have done themselves & their Country so much credit & the Cause so much good, have lost 4 Men of Infantry and about 300 Cavalry at most. I long to speak to You about a number of things which I cannot mention in a letter."
