Sarah Stoddart was the sister of Sir John Stoddart, kings advocate at Malta. In 1808 she married William Hazlitt (1778-1830); in 1822 they were divorced.

Charles Lamb's letters discuss his writings, acquaintances (especially Coleridge), and family (especially his and Mary's adopted daughter Emma Isola). Mary Lamb's letters discuss Sarah Stoddart's family and love life and frequently allude to her own bouts of depression and mental illness.
