Italian Drawings of the Cinquecento
Thursday, November 12, 2015, 10 am to 3 pm
The Morgan Library & Museum has one of the finest collections of Italian Renaissance drawings in North America, and a major catalogue of those drawings is currently in preparation. Working directly from the drawings, this one-day seminar will discuss some of the highlights from this collection while also exploring both practical and theoretical approaches to drawing in Renaissance Italy: how drawings functioned in workshop practice, relationships between drawing and painting or printmaking, and design theory for artists including Michelangelo, Raphael, Pontormo, Parmigianino, and others. The connoisseurship and collecting of Italian drawings will also be studied.
The seminar is open to graduate students in the history of art. Interested participants are invited to submit a one paragraph statement which should include the following:
- Name and e-mail
- Academic institution
- Class year
- Field of study
- Interest in drawings
- Reason/s for wanting to participate in the seminar
- A brief recommendation from the student’s advisor is suggested but not required
There is no charge to attend. Lunch is included.
Applications and recommendation letters should be submitted electronically to: drawinginstitute@themorgan.org.
Application deadline: October 2, 2015.
Participants will be notified by October 9, 2015.
