Visitor Guidelines and Policies

The following guidelines are provided to help make the most of your visit to the Morgan and to ensure the protection of the objects and the comfort and safety of all visitors.

The Morgan has zero tolerance for disrespectful or aggressive behavior towards staff or visitors. By visiting the Morgan, you agree to abide by the below guidelines and policies. Violations of the guidelines and policies may result in your being asked to leave the Morgan (without refund).

Coat Check and Prohibited Items

All bags are subject to security inspection and search. Please anticipate lines at the entrance. The Museum is not responsible for items that are lost, stolen, damaged, or left behind.

Complimentary coat and bag check guidelines:

  • Coats, if not worn, must be checked at the coatroom.
  • All backpacks, briefcases, and large bags must be checked
  • Luggage, garment bags, carry-on bags, large duffle bags, bicycles, skateboards, skates, scooters, plants, or flowers may not be brought into the Museum and cannot be checked.
  • Strollers may be brought into the Museum but cannot be checked.
  • Sealed boxes, packages, or musical instruments may not be brought into the Museum and cannot be checked.
  • All umbrellas must be checked unless it is contained within an admissibly sized bag.
  • Outside food and drink cannot be brought into the Museum and may not be checked at the coatroom.
  • The Museum reserves the right to decide what can and cannot be checked in at the coatroom.
  • The Museum will not release any checked items without a valid ticket—no exceptions. Please keep your ticket safe throughout your visit.

The Museum reserves the right to refuse entry to any visitor carrying the following prohibited items:

  • Large bags, luggage, and musical instruments
  • Glass containers, jars, aerosol cans, and liquids other than water
  • Any large objects, such as flags, banners, frames, artwork, shopping carts, sporting goods, and recreational equipment
  • Marking materials, paint, adhesives, epoxies, or glues
  • Dogs or other pets (Service animals are welcome)
  • Plants and flowers
  • Costumes including masks that cover the full face
  • Weapons and hazardous materials
  • Wagons and scooters, including e-scooters
  • Any other items that could put the art or visitors at risk, to be determined at the sole discretion of the Morgan Security Team General

Guidelines:

  • Engaging in conduct that disrupts or interferes with normal operation of the Morgan, or that disturbs staff or other Museum visitors is not permitted. Such conduct includes:
    • Harassing or threatening behavior
    • Using obscene or abusive language or gestures
    • Making unreasonable noise, including loud talking on a cell phone or otherwise
    • Weapons of any type are prohibited
    • The dissemination of pamphlets of any kind is not permitted
  • Admission:
    • You may not enter prior to the time listed on your ticket.
    • Late admittance cannot be guaranteed.
    • Regardless of weather, any entry queues will form outside the building.
    • We recommend arriving just before your scheduled entry time.
  • The Morgan retains the right to close at its discretion. If the Museum closes on the day or time of your visit following your ticket purchase, we will alert you and issue an automatic refund.
  • Please do not touch the artwork. No eating or drinking is currently permitted onsite.
  • While pencils, sketchbooks, and notebooks are allowed, no pens, ink, paints, markers, easels, or stools are permitted.
  • Sitting on the floor while sketching or taking notes is not permitted.
  • Unless otherwise indicated, you may take photographs for personal use.
  • The use of flash, video, selfie sticks, tripods and other such equipment is prohibited.
  • In consideration of others, we ask that visitors refrain from speaking on their cell phones except in lobby areas.
  • There is no lecturing in the galleries except by Morgan Library & Museum staff and docents.
  • The Morgan Library & Museum is a smoke-free environment.
  • If you have fever, chills, cough, muscle pains, headache, loss of taste or smell, or think you may have been exposed to COVID-19 prior to your visit, please contact us to reschedule or to arrange a full refund.
  • An inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 and other infectious conditions exists in any public space where people are present. Those visiting the Morgan Library & Museum voluntarily assume all risks related to exposure to COVID-19, other infectious conditions, and other hazards that may be present in a public space.
  • Our visitor services staff may request contact information to facilitate visitor research. You may decline participation in research by unsubscribing from our e-mail list at any time.
