Charles W. Engelhard Curator and Head of the Department of Drawings and Prints

Job Responsibilities

The Morgan invites applications for the position of Charles W. Engelhard Curator and Head of the Department of Drawings and Prints. This position supervises all aspects of the Departmentís work, including the care, storage, loan, display, and interpretation of the Morganís extensive collection of drawings, prints, and other works of art created before 1900, which include its holdings of paintings and sculpture. S/he will oversee the development of departmental and cross-collection exhibitions; research, write, and lecture on the collection; oversee departmental acquisitions and set long-term goals for collection development; direct the work of the Drawing Institute dedicated to encouraging new scholarship in the field of drawings; and hire, mentor, and supervise the staff of the Department. Other responsibilities include donor cultivation and active participation in the intellectual life of the institution. This position reports to the Director of Collections.


  • A minimum of 8 years experience and demonstrated record of accomplishment as a museum curator
  • General knowledge of art history and expertise in field of master drawings; Ph.D. preferred
  • Proven record of independent scholarly research and publications of the highest standard; excellent writing skills
  • Creativity, and interest in making scholarship accessible to a broad audience
  • Proven record of high quality exhibitions with broad public appeal
  • Excellent management and organizational skills; demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, supervise, and collaborate with staff of all levels
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Strong presentation skills and an ability to engage a wide range of audiences
  • Familiarity with the art market and knowledge of private collections
  • Willingness and ability to travel as required
  • Experience cultivating and working with collectors and donors
  • Very good working knowledge of at least one and preferably two relevant European languages (French, German, Italian, Dutch, or Spanish)
