A major figure in American art since the 1960s, Lucas Samaras (born Greece 1936) is known primarily for this sculptures, in which he transforms familiar objects, such as chairs and boxes, into strange, often threatening artworks, and for his hallucinatory photographs, mostly of himself. He is also, however, an extraordinary draftsman who has produced a considerable body of work on paper throughout his career. This catalogue and the exhibition it accompanies celebrate the exceptional gift of forty-eight pastel drawings by Samaras to the Morgan Library & Museum from artist and longtime dealer Arne Glimcher.
