Subliming Vessel:
The Drawings of Matthew Barney

This catalogue accompanies an exhibition of Matthew Barney's works on paper and a landmark collaboration between the artist and the Morgan Library. Barney has selected items from the Morgan's collections to display as part of his storyboards, underscoring the importance literature and mythology play in the elaboration of his stories. One hundred of the artist’s most important drawings are presented from his major series of works — including “The Cremaster Cycle,” “The Drawing Restraint” series, and most notably “Ancient Evenings,” based on Norman Mailer’s novel of the same name.
