"Endless fertility": The Comic Art of Charles Dickens Michael Slater
"Endless fertility in laughter-causing detail is Mr. Dickens's most astonishing peculiarity", wrote the critic Walter Bagehot in 1858. Michael Slater, Emeritus Professor of Victorian Literature, Birkbeck College, University of London, will consider Dickens's deployment of this "astonishing peculiarity" across a wide range of comic writing from broad farce to biting satire, as well as in the creation of a gallery of great humorous characters. He will illustrate his discussion with readings from Dickens's novels, stories, journalism, and other writings Wednesday, November 02, 2011, 6:30 p.m.*
Tickets: $15 for Non-Members; $10 for Members * The exhibition Charles Dickens at 200 will be open at 5:30 p.m. especially for program attendees. Order tickets
