Notes:

Steinbergʼs vast artistic output, which encompasses drawing, painting, sculpture and his legendary cartoons, reflects his architectural training, knowledge of art history and brilliant sense of humor. Born in Romania, Steinberg studied in Milan before growing anti-Semitism forced him to immigrate, first to the Dominican Republic and then to New York. He contributed drawings to several magazines, but it was his work for The New Yorker that would cement his popularity. In many ways Steinberg was the consummate insider, a man whose closest relationships were with the artists associated with the New York School. On the other hand, he was always something of an outsider who brought a fresh, comic eye to everyday scenes and whose traumatic past was evident in his long-standing interest in documentation and other symbols of bureaucratic power.
