Produced at the end of Domenico Tiepolo's life, this sheet belonged to a sequence, now dispersed, of 104 drawings illustrating the life of Punchinello, a commedia dell'arte character who in Domenico Tiepolo's series came to represent everyman. This is the fifth sheet in the sequence and shows the marriage feast of Punchinello's parents; as so often in the series, Tiepolo plays with the history of Venetian art and here frames the scene in a way that recalls earlier paintings of the Wedding at Cana by Veronese and others.
