Provenance:
Boguslaw Jolles (d. 1912), Dresden (L. 381a), to 1895; (his sale, Hugo Helbing, Dresden, 31 October 1895); Dr. Michael Berolzheimer (1866-1942), Garmisch-Partenkirchen¹; (by whom sold under duress at Adolf Weinmüller, Munich, 9-10 March 1939, lot 103)²; Dr. Erhard Göpel (1906-1966); (by whom consigned to P. & D. Colnaghi & Co., London, 1958); from whom purchased. -- ¹When Berolzheimer departed from Germany in 1938 to escape Nazi persecution, he left his collection of drawings with his stepson, Robert Schweisheimer. Schweisheimer himself fled Germany later in 1938, and the Berolzheimer drawings were soon after sold at Weinmüller on November 30-December 1/2, 1938 and March 9-10, 1939. -- ²The proceeds from the sale were deposited into Berolzheimer's blocked account at Hypothek- und Wechselbank, Garmisch, the funds of which were in 1941 confiscated by the Nazi government.
