According to Prud'hon's inscription, Cerclet, who was born in Russia and studied law in Paris, would have been 22 years old at the time he sat for this portrait.

Signed and dated in black chalk, at lower right, "P.P. Prud'hon / 1818".
Inscribed in pen and brown ink, on back of wooden support of old frame, "Portrait de Mr / A. Cerclet / Maître des requêtes / Secrétaire-rédacteur / de la chambre des Députés".
