According to Prud'hon's inscription, Cerclet, who was born in Russia and studied law in Paris, would have been 22 years old at the time he sat for this portrait.

Inscription:

Signed and dated in black chalk, at lower right, "P.P. Prud'hon / 1818".
Inscribed in pen and brown ink, on back of wooden support of old frame, "Portrait de Mr / A. Cerclet / Maître des requêtes / Secrétaire-rédacteur / de la chambre des Députés".
