Thomas Percy, Bishop of Dromore and editor of Reliques of Ancient English Poetry, was involved in questioning the authenticity of poems that the teenage poet Thomas Chatterton had attributed to a 15th-century monk called Thomas Rowley, though they were actually his own creations. The identity of the curious "Gentleman" that Camden refers to in this letter is unknown.
Requesting "the sight of Chatterton's Papers for two or three days in order to shew them to a Gentleman who has a great curiosity to see those extraordinary compositions."
