Book of Hours
Ms. book of hours for the use of Orléans (Hours of the Virgin, Office of the Dead); written and illuminated in Rouen, France, in 1525 (calendar begins this year).
Decoration: 21 large miniatures, 19 small miniatures, 12 calendar illustrations by the Master of the Ango Hours. Two additional miniatures by the workshop of the Virgil Master ca. 1400, were at one time stuck to flyleaf and are now housed separately. One is of the Nativity, with Joseph (?), nimbed, kneeling at the Virgin's feet, and another bearded figure (Joseph?) seated on the ground. It is not clear which of the two male figures is Joseph. (MS M.61a.1). The other represents St. Peter, full face, between two groups of men, three or four of whom appear to be Canons, wearing almuces; the others are civilians (MS M.61a.2).
Artist: Master of the Ango Hours.
