Psalter-Hours
Ms. psalter-hours; written and illuminated in Paris, France, between 1228 and 1234.
The calendar contains the feast of Francis of Assisi and thus the manuscript dates to 1228 or later. The feast for Dominic of Bologna was added in a later hand suggesting that the book was made before 1234. The presence in the calendar of English saints such as Botulph of Lincolnshire (June 17) suggests the possibility that the book was made for an English patron.
Obituary entries in the calendar indicate that the book previously belonged to the Restwold family of Berkshire. An inscription in 15th-century hand on the verso of a flyleaf reads: "Memorandum yt I Henry ffarryngton gyft and bekweth thez boke to be hayre lomes at my maner off ffarryngton ffor ever per me h. ffarryngton." The manor of Farington is located in Lancashire.
Decoration: 12 full-page miniatures, each with 2 historiated roundels; 24 calendar roundels, 10 historiated initials.
