A highlighted path lies before an incoming storm in this striking landscape by artist Narcisse Virgile Diaz de la Peña (1807–1876). Before he fell under the influence of Rousseau and followed him into the forest of Fontainebleau, Diaz decorated porcelain and painted sentimental figures. In Fontainebleau, he shifted his focus to the wild, untouched parts of the forest, recognizing that nature contained a drama of its own. Diaz’s commercial success as a landscape painter allowed him to extend aid to fellow Barbizon artists like Millet and Rousseau.

This magnet is a product made to complement the exhibition Into the Woods: French Drawings and Photographs from the Karen B. Cohen Gift on view at the Morgan Library & Museum June 16 through October 23, 2023.
