Modern/Contemporary Drawings: New Perspectives
In conjunction with the exhibition Embracing Modernism: Ten Years of Drawings Acquisitions, this series of lectures by international scholars will feature current research in the field of twentieth and twenty-first century drawings. This series is co-organized by the Morgan Drawing Institute and the Department of Education.

Exploring specific drawings within the complex suite of Dante’s Inferno, this lecture asks: what vision of contemporary America do Rauschenberg’s Inferno drawings present? What is at stake in the artist’s selection of source material and his decisions regarding its placement and treatment? And how does the project relate to the conventions of drawing in mid-century in New York.

About the speaker: Ed Krĉma is Lecturer in the History of Art at University College Cork, Ireland. He completed a PhD in modern and contemporary art at University College London focusing on issues of temporality and embodiment in drawing after 1940. He has published articles in such journals as Art History, Oxford Art Journal, Art in America and Tate Papers, and has written numerous catalogue essays. In 2010 he co-founded the contemporary art magazine, Enclave Review, of which he is a contributing co-editor.

The exhibition Embracing Modernism: Ten Years of Drawings Acquisitions will be open at 5:30 p.m. for program attendees.
