On Tuesday, October 20: Frankenstein and the “Year Without A Summer”

A massive volcanic eruption in 1815 disrupted the global environment, leading to unseasonal weather and different catastrophes across the world. 1816 is the called the “Year Without A Summer” and teenage Mary Shelley spent the gloomy days indoors reading ghost stories with peers such as her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley and Lord Byron. This program will tell the tale of how a writing competition between stir-crazy friends led to the genesis of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Participants will learn how truth is sometimes stranger than fiction in the creation of one of the world’s most famous monsters.
