A Millennium of Music at the Morgan

Join Robinson McClellan, Assistant Curator of Music, for a tour of highlights from the Morgan’s music collections. Spanning a millennium of music at the Morgan, we will witness the history of notated music from its beginnings in Medieval manuscripts. We’ll see the collections of rare music manuscripts that the Morgan is celebrated for, from Bach to Schubert to Stravinsky to Phillip Glass. We'll delve into the equally rich realms of rare printed music at the Morgan, from a 1567 first edition of Palestrina's Pope Marcellus Mass (pictured) to Glenn Gould's annotated copy of Bach's Goldberg Variations. We will explore other musical treasures including personal letters of famous musicians, a piano roll recorded by Scott Joplin, and more. Many of these represent a rare chance to see gems that are not otherwise readily available for viewing.
