Architectural Surround with Arms of Pope Paul V
Pen and brown ink, brown, red and blue wash, with incised lines in architecture, and collage element, on paper.
6 x 5 3/4 inches (151 x 146 mm)
Purchased on the Fellows Fund as the gift of the Hon. C. Douglas Dillon.
1973.11
Notes:

This sheet is comprised of an architectural surround with two female figures flanking an oval cartouche containing a pasted-in coat of arms at center. The surround replicates a design for a decorative panel above a mantelpiece in the Morgan's album of architectural designs by Jacques Androuet Ducerceau and his workshop (2006.19, folio 28). The coat of arms depicts a dragon with an eagle above, surmounted by a papal tiara; these are likely the arms of Camillo Borghese (1552-1621), who became Pope Paul V in 1605.

Watermark: none visible through lining.
