Description:

Though poorly preserved and somewhat uninspired, the drawing may well be by Fra Bartolommeo himself, despite affinities with the work of Mariotto Albertinelli. A drawing with two studies for a standing Saint Sebastian and a further one of two standing nude boys, both in the Uffizi, are comparable in the handling of the black chalk (inv. 364F; von Holst 1974, 312, no. 44 and inv. 361F).

Inscription:

Watermark: Fragmentary, animal (boar?) within a shield. (cf. Briquet IV, 13588. Nates (in Loire), 1490).

Provenance:
Moscardo Collection, Verona, which passed to Marquis de Calceolari (according to Scholz records; no mark; see under Lugt S. 2990a-g); Janos Scholz, New York (no mark; see Lugt S. 2933b).
