Probably a study for the head of Christ.
Formerly attributed to Giovanni Lanfranco, 1582-1647.

Inscription: 

Faint inscription at lower right in black chalk or graphite(?), "Lafrancho . . . (?)"; inscribed on verso near lower right in pen and brown ink, "Lafrancho".
Watermark: Indecipherable, possibly cock's comb.

Giovanni Piancastelli, Rome (no mark; see Lugt S. 2078a); Edward and Mary Brandegee, Boston (no mark; see Lugt S. 1860c); acquired in Turin in 1951 by Janos Scholz, New York (see Lugt S. 2933b).
