Notes: 

Typescript of the first two sections of the novel with some revisions and corrections by Julian Beck throughout. Published by Simon and Schuster in 1942.
Written in ink on title sheet: "This manuscript was given to the Living Theatre to raise funds for the General Strike for Peace - or whatever - & which purpose it is now serving. It was given to us by Kay Boyle. / Julian Beck / NYC Feb 1985."
Written in ink by Boyle on envelope: "Original first section of a novel which was published under the title 'Primer for Combat.' / Original of a short story which appears in a collectin of mine entitled 'The Smoking Mountain.' / Original proof of my collection of poetry, 'A Glad Day,' which is now out of print. KB. / Julian Beck."
Accompanied by a large manila envelope that originally enclosed the typescript from Boyle to Beck, along with the short story "The smoking mountains" and proof sheets for her collection of poetry "A glad day" (neither of which is present).
