From a dismembered sketchbook dated to ca. 1845 by comparison to other dated sketchbooks. The inscribed lines from from a longer, unpublished poem entitled "The Fallacies of Hope."

Inscription: 

Inscribed in pencil, "And [dolphins?] play around the wreck / The man's [hope?] holding all that hoped / admits the [work?] of the almighty's hand [failing?] fallacy Hope [illegible] far sail / Wreck on the Goodwins".
