Notes: 

The figure appears similar to those drawn on Gerome's first trip to Egypt in 1855-56 when he spent four months traveling down the Nile and producing sensitive portraits of at least a dozen sitters. He wears a kaffiyeh, or traditional Arab head covering that is characteristic throughout North Africa and the Middle East.
