The letter is part of a collection, MA 1352, which consists of letters from Charles Dickens to the Baroness, to her companion Hannah (Meredith) Brown, or the latter's husband, William Brown; with 70 letters written by others to Miss Coutts or to Dickens in his capacity as her unofficial almoner; and a few others. This copy of the leaflet, of which only one other is known to exist, was enclosed in a letter from Dickens to Miss Coutts dated 28 October 1847 (MA 1352.79).
This leaflet was written for distribution to potential inmates of Urania Cottage, a home for "fallen women" in Shepherd's Bush, which was funded by Miss Burdett-Coutts.
Formerly cataloged as "An Appeal [in the form of a letter signed "Your Friend"] addressed to the street women of London announcing the establishment [by Miss Burdett-Coutts] of the Shepherd's Bush Home for Fallen Women."
