Best known for his paintings of nested squares in various colors called Homage to the Square, Josef Albers also produced a vast number of oil sketches, such as the present one, in which he experimented with color combinations. The scribbled pencil notations and free handling of paint - which contrasts with the austerity and strict geometry of the finished paintings - provide insight into the artistʼs working process.
