Original watercolor of a design for a "yellow-back" cover for an edition of the Alexandre Dumas novel Count of Monte Cristo; published by the firm of Thomas Hodgson, probably sometime during the 1850's.

Inscription: 

In pencil on verso: Parlour Novelist not in P.L.; in pen: Hodgson; in pen on recto, above design: To be done first [at foot below design] The ornament to be lower.
