Signed and dated at lower right, "Edmund J. Sullivan. 1914"; inscribed in ink at bottom, "They will not meet on the Day of Judgement," said the priest. "If God Almighty held the truncheon of the lists, if Saint Michael blew the trumpet for the swords to cross ... the other would not come"; in pencil below caption is written (incorrectly), "The God of the Gongs?"

Original drawing for an illustration for G.K. Chesterton's short story "The duel of Dr. Hirsch," from The wisdom of Father Brown; as the story first appeared with Sullivan's illustrations in the Pall Mall magazine, Aug., 1914.

Summary: 

Drawing shows Flambeau perched on the limb of a tree on the far side of a stone wall and peering into the window of a house, as another man dressed in military uniform straddles the top of the wall behind him, and Father Brown leans casually against the wall, observing them with his arms folded.
