Black, red, brown, ochre, and white chalk, considerable stumping; accented in pen and brown ink and wash, with white and light brown opaque watercolor, on paper; traces of a framing line.

Purchased by Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913) in 1909.

Drawing is a copy after the lower right corner of Rubens's painting the "Fall of the Damned", probably executed about 1618-21, now in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich.

Inscription:

Inscribed on verso, at lower left corner, in an old hand, in graphite, "dJ / JR [circle with vertical line] ·": ; in brown ink, "49" ("23" crossed out); in lower right corner, in graphite, "P.P. Rubens"; in another hand, "£31.10.0". In the opposite direction, in a seventeenth-century hand, in graphite, "van rubbens no 23".
