The composition is probably based on a sketch of the Madonna with St. Anne in the Louvre, as pointed out by David Brown.

Inscription: 

Inscribed on piece of paper presumably removed from verso of drawing, and now in departmental files, in graphite, "by(?)Luini".

Purchased in Zurich in 1950 by Janos Scholz, New York (no mark; see Lugt S. 2933b).
