This drawing is a study for the two trumpeters in the painting Leonidas at Thermopylae (Musée du Louvre, Paris), begun in 1804 and finished in 1814.

Inscription: 

Numbered in pen and brown ink at upper right, "32"; signed in pen and brown ink with paraphs of Eugene (Lugt 839) and Jules (Lugt 1437) David.
