An autograph letter concerning the origin and provenance of this drawing, which Frederic Chapman says was submitted by Leech in 1836 "as a specimen of his ability to illustrate the book" [Dickens's Pickwick Papers], is MA 6336.

Numbered at lower center, in graphite, "26"; below, an illegible erased inscription.
