Brabazon trained for a short time under James D'Egville and Alfred Downing Fripp in Rome; however, he was largely self-taught. On trips to Spain, Italy, Egypt, the Indies, and France, Brabazon painted scores of landscapes in watercolor and other media. The present drawing likely dates to the time Brabazon spent in northern Africa as the drawing's verso bears the text, "Tangiers." The drawing is also inscribed with his conventional signature: 'HBB'. Sir Frederick Wedmore summarized Brabazon's career as an aristocratic and amateur artist by quipping that Brabazon was "a country gentleman who at seventy years old made his debut as a professional artist and straightway became famous."
