The drawing forms a pendant with the artist's "Christ before Pontius Pilate", in the Prado, Madrid, which is signed and dated 1652.

Inscription: 

Watermark: Foolscap with five points over "4" and three balls, and two balls on cap (similar to Heawood, no. 1921: 1648-9).
