Notes:
This pen and ink drawing, with figures painted in watercolor, dates to Edward Lear's first trip to Italy in 1837. Lear was sent to Rome by his patron Lord Stanley, later 14th Earl of Derby (1799-1869), and during this sojourn he not only visited Rome, but also Corfu, and San Remo. Lear probably encountered this loving mother and two children wearing local costume during this period
