Two worshipers flanking small deity in nimbus

between 900 B.C. and 875 B.C.
dark brown serpentine
18 x 9 mm
Morgan Seal 685
Provenance:
Acquired by Pierpont Morgan sometime between 1885 and 1908.
Notes:

"A somewhat unusual representation is seen in 685, on which two worshipers appear one at either side of a god in a nimbus. The nimbus is rendered by means of small hatches, as in 679, suggesting a date early in the ninth century for this piece, although it is far smaller than the other seal stones assigned to this time."--Porada, CANES, p. 82
