Imitator of Pier Leone Ghezzi
1674-1755
Goldoni and the Figures of the Commedia dell'Arte
18th century
Brush and brown wash on paper.
8 15/16 x 14 7/8 inches (225 x 378 mm)
Gift of Janos Scholz.
1988.64
Notes:

Although long attributed to Pier Leone Ghezzi, this sheet appears to be from a large group of forgeries that first appeared in Milan in the 1940s. Other works from the group are found in museum collections in Europe and America (see also Minneapolis Institute of Art, no. 69.53, for example). The drawings, radically different in style from authentic Ghezzi caricatures, were said to be youthful works by the artist, an argument particularly unconvincing with regard to this sheet: Carlo Goldoni only came to prominence during the final decade of Ghezzi's life.

Inscription:

Inscribed along upper edge, in point of brush and brown ink, "Viva le Maschere Italiane dell'Arte GoldoniÖ P.L. Ghezzi".
Watermark: Fleur-de-lis inside double circle, surmounted by six-pointed star.

Provenance:
Janos Scholz.
