Woman Bathing Her Feet at a Brook
1658
Etching and drypoint, printed on Japanese paper.
160 x 80 mm
RvR 284
NHD 309, I
Provenance:
Alexandre-Pierre-François Robert-Dumesnil (1778-1864), Paris; Carl Schlösser (1827-1884), Elberfeld; George W. Vanderbilt (1862-1914); from whom purchased by J. Pierpont Morgan in 1905.
Inscription:

Signed and dated upper left, "Rembrandt f. 1658".

Notes:

Watermark: None.
Early impressions have rough edges and in the early catalogues are referred to as a first state. On later impressions, Barnard (cat. no.9, 1921) found a diagonal scratch below the middle of the top margin, which Hind and Münz classed as a second state. Hollstein suggested that Rembrandt used the piece of copper he removed from B. 70, of the previous year (see I. de Bruyn in "Oud Hollan", 1939 (lvi) p.15). Possibly identical with the etching described in de Jonghe's inventory as 'Vroutgen aan de put', and in Röver's inventory with one of 'twee andere liefhebberijtjes'. (White and Boon)
