Provenance:
George W. Vanderbilt (1862-1914); from whom purchased by J. Pierpont Morgan in 1905.
Inscription:

Watermark: None.

Notes:

Matthew 27:60, Mark 15:46-47, Luke 23:53 and John 19:41-42.
Executed almost entirely in etching with only a few supplementary touches of drypoint on the Virgin's left elbow and the adjacent wall, the image is constructed from a transparent network of parallel lines. The strong effect of light thrown off by an artificial source shielded from our view is abetted here by the glossy white of the thin Japanese paper. (Boston 1969, no. 78)
