Self Portrait in a Cloak with a Falling Collar: Bust
ca. 1631
Etching on thin paper.
64 x 54 mm
RvR 18
NHD 98, VIII
Provenance:
Nathaniel Smith, (2nd half of 18th century), London ; Karl Eduard von Liphart (1808-1891), Bonn and Florence; Theodore Irwin (1827-1902), Oswego, New York; from whom purchased by J. Pierpont Morgan in 1900.
Inscription:

Signed in monogram and dated upper left, "RHL 1631". The monogram and date redrawn (not by Rembrandt) in State II, changing "1630" to "1631".

Notes:

Coarsely reworked all over with the burin by another hand. Hair now reaches below the tip of the nose on the left hand side of this face. (White and Boon)
The first state may already have been reworked by another hand, as has been suggested by Münz. (White and Boon)
