Signed and dated, "Rembrandt f. 1651".

Watermark: None.
Collector's signature and date in verso, "P. mariette. 1670". Also inscription in Mariette's hand, "Clement de Johnge marchand de tailles douces a Amsterdam 1668".
The shape of the hat has been made more regular and a hatband added. Additional work casts the right side of the sitter's features into deeper shadow. A framing arch has been sketchily indicated in drypoint. (Boston 1969, p. 55)
