1657
Etching and drypoint on paper.
sheet: 127 x 162 mm; plate mark: 125 x 160 mm
RvR 108
NHD 302, III
Provenance:
George W. Vanderbilt (1862-1914); from whom purchased by J. Pierpont Morgan in 1905.
Inscription:

Signed and dated lower left, on the rim of the well, "Rembrandt f. 1658" and center left: "Rembrandt f 1658" (in state III).

Notes:

John 4:5-29.
Impression with surface tone.
One of two impressions of state III in the Library (see RvR 109).
The shadow cast by the woman on the wall and the window above burnished out. The shadow in the top left hand corner lightened by burnishing and redrawing. A shadow now appears to the left of the line silhouetting the woman's face and bust. The shadows on the wall and in the left hand foreground darkened by additional shading. (White and Boon)
