Oil sketches occupy the place between painting and drawing. These small-scale works document artists' explorations of form, light, and color and reflect the challenge of capturing nature's ephemeral elements. The Thaw Collection contains more than 130 oil sketches, ranging from works by eighteenth-century Neoclassical pioneers of the genre to studies by artists active during the late nineteenth-century. This publication, a fully illustrated catalogue raisonné of the Thaw Collection’s oil sketches, contains new research addressing compelling questions surrounding the creation and function of these works, first presented at a symposium at the Morgan in early 2009.
