Hubert Robert was the most prolific and best-known landscape painter of eighteenth-century France. Less well known than his paintings, Robert's drawings have been represented in the Morgan’s collection since the early twentieth century. While his drawings usually were executed in red chalk, this sparkling sketchbook, filled with the young artist's immediate impressions of Rome, attests to his equally dazzling ability in pen and wash. Enclosed in a slipcase, the sketchbook facsimile is accompanied by a commentary by Cara Dufour Denison.
