The Morgan Picture Bible, probably commissioned by King Louis IX of France, was designed to make Old Testament stories relevant to medieval readers by setting them in contemporaneous environments. For example, depictions of architecture evoke the castles and houses of thirteenth-century French towns, and battle scenes use thirteenth-century armor, weapons, and battle insignia. The stories are illustrated with brilliant colors and exquisite detail. This milestone publication of the manuscript was created for an exhibition held at the Walters Arts Museum in Baltimore in 2002.
