Marcel Proust was born in Paris to wealthy bourgeois parents. Though he became ambitiously involved in the Parisian social scene as a young man, he gradually withdrew after the deaths of his parents, focusing instead on his writing. In 1912, the first volume of his most famous work, Remembrance of Things Past, was published at his own expense and with little success. The next volumes of this work, however, secured his international fame.
