This brooch is a tribute to the Library of Congress's mission of collecting and sharing the wisdom of all civilizations. This design is inspired by an architectural detail on the second floor of the library’s Great Hall. The laurel-wreath border encloses an open book and torches of learning—a recurring motif in the elaborately decorated Jefferson Building, which symbolizes the importance of learning in a knowledge-based democracy.
